Documentary Film Photography
My documentary film photography portrays real life.
Many of you have been asking about my photography process. With the opening reception of Illuminating Women behind us, I reflect on my decision to document this exhibition using my Leica M6 35mm camera. For more reasons than one, it was the perfect choice.
At the very early stages of this exhibition, I knew documentary film photography would be my contribution to this collaboration. The natural beauty captured by film is like no other. Intuitively, I knew this was the direction I wanted to go. It was my goal to capture the natural beauty of the 30 inspiring women highlighted in Illuminating Women.
I create photographs using the light and environment available to me.
This allows an intimacy to happen between me and the subjects. Challenges of working this way do arise, but the rewards far outweigh its challenges.
Documentary film photography forces me to slow down, pay attention and practice patience. As a result, the process continues to teach me how to see in a new light.
Would you rather have 100 mediocre photographs or one amazing one? I prefer the latter.
I chose to create archival pigment prints.
Because I don’t currently have a darkroom, I created fine art prints from scanned negatives.
The fine art paper I chose to use for this exhibition allows the subjects to come alive. Rich details in the vast tonal range creates a 3-dimensional appearance. This empowers the viewer by allowing them to get to know the subject on a deeper level.
