Michigan Avenue Chicago Man Named Rocky
Michigan Avenue Chicago Man Named Rocky
This is Rocky's story:
His sign reads, "Hi, I'm Rocky. Me and my friend lost everything in a fire. Anything helps us get on our paws & feet again. God bless & thank you."
Rocky's landlords weren't appropriately fixing the problems in his home. This resulted in a fire. Rocky and his wife take turns sitting here on the corner of Michigan and Pearson. Their cat is always by their side. I ask, "What are you reading?" "Harry Potter," he replies. Rocky couldn't recall whether it was the second or third book from the series. He enjoys the books more than the movies.
I believe each of us has a unique story.
I want to learn them.
What if we listen to their stories before judging them?
What if they're doing the best they can?
When I ask myself these questions, I feel more compassion and empathy.
I use Mel Robbins' 5 Second Rule often.
It forces me to get out of my head and to do something that makes me feel uncomfortable. It also forces me to do it in a more timely manner.
During this journey of The 100 Day Project, you'll realize I struggle with actually knowing what some of my true passions actually are. I'm confident to say that film photography is one of my passions. I took Rocky's photographs with my Leica M6. I LOVE the simplicity of it. 35 mm film, no fancy settings and no fancy options. Aperture, shutter speed, manual focus. The basics of photography down to it's core.
I invite you along on this journey.
